When I redesign a bedroom, I always include a chair. Growing up in my mom’s house, we were not allowed to sit on our beds once we were up and out of it. We had a chair in our rooms for that, be it a card table chair, a lawn chair brought in from the yard, or a chair handed down from mom and dad’s room after they replaced theirs. Not everyone has to think like me, but I do offer the thought to my clients. two have accepted the idea…But today I learned that there are good reasons for not sitting in or on your bed…and they have nothing to do with mom’s reasons. According to a WebMD article, a sleep psychologist encourages all not to watch television, pay bills or talk on the phone in the bed, as you do not work where you sleep. The article continues by saying your bed is for sleeping…and nothing should prevent you from getting a good nights sleep. If you are interested in reading the article, Look for the heading of “Make your bed for a better sleep?,” at www.psychologytoday.com.
The article was written by Michael J. Breus, Ph. D., Mar. 5, 2011.
Happy Sunday tomorrow, all… Hopefully you can find a moment for ’yourSELF’ somewhere in the day. Find a book…and actually read a chapter or two. You might be able to get used to it.

Good Saturday morning, friends……Not everyone is a headboard person…but headboards can play a major role in your bedroom. Oh yes…some are large and difficult to move, but many anchor the bed..its frame and some footboards. Headboards… can dictate the room’s décor and bed linen that will fit into its overall design. They can be low, allowing you to hang art or design above the bed…or be high in height, actually, becoming the above-the-bed art. And if you want the feel of a headboard, without the headboard, there are decals of headboards that can be affixed on the wall…… Headboards give a ‘complete’ look to a bed (my mom’s conclusion on the subject) … and there are a plenty to choose from. There is no rule, however that dictates that a headboard is a must. Many do not have or want a headboard and that’s okay. Its a choice…and its yours to make. But if you are shopping for a headboard, be mindful of the height of your mattress/box spring combo; or the height of your mattress and base if you have a platform bed. . Many of the platform beds come with their own headboard…as part of its base… Know the width/length of your mattress (twin; XL twin (most dorm room sized beds); full; queen; king; and California king). Shop around for a good deal…and this could be a great weekend DIY project….if you wouldn’t mind a wall mounted headboard, which is my preference. And if the frame has legs, make sure those legs can attach to the frame of your bed. You certainly would not want a headboard just sitting against the wall…..If you have questions…feel free to ask the staff where you’re shopping or contact a store that specializes in bedroom furniture, like Bedroom Express, part of the four stores that make up Furniture Row, nation-wide. You can also visit the HGTV mag at www.hgtvmagazine.com
. Although I do not recommend buying mattresses online…I think buying the hardware, like the frame and headboard itself, may be a good thing. To make sure you do not have to dive into a return nightmare, PLEASE PLEAE PLEASE make sure your measurements are accurate. Most companies accept returns…but the actual returning can be a pain.
Good Morning designers. Its cyperMonday…and there are sales everywhere. If you are planning to purchase furniture online, which I do not recommend, but if you are, please make sure you measure, measure and measure again. There is nothing like a table or chair or couch that will not fit into the space it was intended to fit. Make sure you leave adequate traffic space…that two people can walk through the room, going in opposite directions without having to dance the waltz to get by. Remember that color quality can depend on how your computer delivers it. Not all furniture is created to fit in all spaces. Keep that in mind when purchasing furniture on or offline. If you see a set that you think you like and have the opportunity to go to a location and see it in person, please take it. The pictured set is a dining room set sold by Walmart and Walmart.com. I had a chance to see the table and a chair at my local Walmart…and it looks like it does in the picture…But I had a chance to touch it and see how it was constructed. Enjoy your shopping!
